Diapers and Dumbbells



Call it a modern-day “baby boom”: CrossFit South Brooklyn increased the size of its coaching staff to keep up with the popularity of the Diapers and Dumbbells class. CrossFit Level 2 trainer Melissa Loranger runs the class for new parents every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 11 a.m. The athletes, many of whom have never done CrossFit before, are able to bring their babies and get a workout. The programming for the classes is “safe and conservative,” Loranger explains. She includes movements that strengthen the core and pelvic floor. She also emphasizes good shoulder-girdle mechanics so parents can counter the internal shoulder rotation that often happens when a parent holds a baby. “We definitely want to give these parents an opportunity to sweat a little bit, with childcare
